Dear Beloved Members of the Rochester Community,
For more than a year, GRCC with our partners at Faith Community Alliance and Baptist Ministers Alliance, have listened to our community concerning the terrible violence that has afflicted us. After analyzing 700 comments from 500 people in eight forums on violence, we offer to you ten community standards arising from the people. These standards are like pillars on which the foundation of our new community can be laid. We offer these standards as a Covenant for the Beloved Community, using the vision of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Our goal is to create a beloved community and
this will require a qualitative change in our souls
as well as a quantitative change in our lives.
~ Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The Beloved Community met Sunday, June 29th around a picnic lunch at the Highland Park Bowl on South Avenue. An array of leaders and variety of initiatives creatively presented the ten standards. It was all done through music from different groups, urban poetry slams, with people well known and quiet heros little known.
Perhaps you saw Mark Hare’s column in the Democrat and Chronicle about it, or watched us on WHAM13 News!
