A new and exciting venture is unfolding on
the city's streets this Spring with the advent of a youth
mentoring/bike repairing project!! With funding from Friends Helping
Friends, a local grassroots organization, inner city youth will be
mentored in the "art" of bike repair, leading to them receiving a bike
of their own. In addition, they will also repair other bikes to be
given out in the community to those in need.
Benefits of this unique program are many but
include introducing the joy of biking to kids who might otherwise never
experience it, keeping used bikes out of our landfills thereby
protecting our precious environment and providing transportation to
many adults who might use this as a primary mode of transportation for
their jobs. Most importantly, however, adult mentors will be provided
for kids in dire need of role models in an environment which is safe
and healthy. They'll learn good work habits, patience, perseverance and
how to both give and receive in the community. Sounds interesting?
Here's how you can help.
If you have an hour or 2 a week to share
with an individual child, have some very basic bike repair skills or
the inclination to learn them and are willing to get in on the ground
floor of this project, get in touch with us:
Bill Danza 621-4616 or Email: wdanza@rochester.rr.com
Dan Lill 865-9872 or Email: dlill@rochester.rr.com
We are also accepting any used bikes or bike
parts and would be happy to pick them up.
