Commission on Christian-Muslim Relations
The Zen Center of Rochester
In order to promote dialogue between Christians and Muslims, the Commission on Christian-Muslim Relations is offering during January, 2008, three carefully chosen videos that we hope will stimulate wide-ranging and inclusive discussion.
All events will be held on consecutive Monday evenings from 7pm to 9pm at the Islamic Center of Rochester on Westfall Road. Coffee and cookies will be available, and there will be the opportunity to observe Muslim prayer either during or after the programs.
Week One (Monday evening, January 14): “A Visit to a Mosque in America.” In this video we hear from the members of the Islamic Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, about their lives as Muslims in America. We will show selections of this video in order to allow ample time for discussion and group reflection on topics of current interest to Christians and Muslims right here in Rochester.
Week Two (Monday evening, January 21: “Empire of Faith.” This video covers a broad swath of Muslim history, from the Prophet Muhammad’s founding of the Muslim community in Medina (seventh century CE) to the fall of the Ottoman Empire after WWI. We will focus on the section devoted to the Crusades. We will provide ample time for discussion and group reflection.
Week Three (Monday evening, January 28): “Muslims.” This video, first shown on Frontline, depicts several contemporary Muslim communities around the world and gives a sense of the great variety of cultural practice and opinion within Islam. We will show selections of this video in order to allow ample time for discussion and group reflection on current attitudes (Christian and otherwise) towards Islam.
